A leading US newspaper while referring to US official said that Obama administration has decided to sell 8 state of the art F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan and Congress has been informed on this count. However it is not clear that announcement in this regard will be made during Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif visit or otherwise.

Fazlehaq College principal blames politicians for teachers’ strike

MARDAN: A day after protests by college teachers and employees against him prompted the government to send him on 10 days leave, the Fazlehaq College Principal Colonel (R) Sultan Zeb said politicians had a hand in fuelling the token strike and politicizing the issue.

Talking to The News, he said the students had taken his side in the tussle and staged rally in his support. “Students totalling more than 700 from all the houses including Sahibzada, Sher Shah and Abdali came out in my support and criticized the teachers. I was told that today the teachers were threatening to punish the students and fail them in the examination in the practicals for supporting me,” he claimed.

Col (R) Sultan Zeb said the district administration and the education department asked him to go on 10 days leave to defuse the situation as they feared clashes between the students and teachers and other employees. He alleged that anti-ANP politicians Umar Farooq Hoti and Khan Akbar Afridi had come to the college and provoked the teachers and other staff against him. “Our college is located in the provincial assembly constituency, PK-23 Mardan, from where these two politicians are contesting against former chief minister and ANP leader Ameer Haider Hoti. They have been promising the teachers and staff that after winning election they would resolve all their problems and fulfill all the promises that chief minister Hoti had made and was unable to deliver,” he said.

According to Col (R) Sultan Zeb, he gave 125 percent raise in salaries to the teachers in the last three years by managing to obtain funds from the provincial government because the college had no money. He argued that presently he was unable to give the 20 percent raise in salaries demanded by the teachers as only the college board of governor was authorized to do so. “I served the college for almost seven years and raised the image of the college through hard work. I wasn’t bad all these years and now suddenly I am being criticized and protests are staged against me,” he said.

The college teachers had organized token strike for three days to demand the principal’s resignation. They blamed him for delaying implementation of the decision to raise their salaries by 20 percent, failing to maintain discipline in the college and availing extension in his service for two terms due to his political connections to the previous ANP-led provincial government

Top leaders in KP to contest from hometowns

PESHAWAR: Top leaders of the political parties hailing from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are planning to contest the upcoming polls from their hometown constituencies.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan and former president of Pakistan General (R) Pervez Musharraf are also likely to contest from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Musharraf had announced his intention to contest for the lone National Assembly seat from Chitral. It isn’t clear from where Imran would contest but Swat and Peshawar have been mentioned as like places from where he would try his luck.

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has proposed the name of Maulana Fazlur Rehman as candidate for two National Assembly constituencies of Dera Ismail Khan and Tank districts. The JUI-F chief had also contested polls on two National Assembly seats, Dera Ismail Khan and Bannu, in the 2008 general election, losing from the former and winning the latter.

Awami National Party (ANP) President Asfandyar Wali Khan will contest for NA-7 Charsadda in his native district wherefrom he was elected to the National Assembly in the 2008 general election. He had lost another National Assembly seat from Swabi district in the same election.

Aftab Sherpao, Nawaz Sharif, Siraj Ul Haq

Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) chief Aftab Sherpao, who belongs to Sherpao village in Charsadda, will contest from his hometown constituency NA-8 Charsadda. He had won this seat along with a provincial assembly seat in the 2008 polls. His son Sikandar Hayat Sherpao, who is also provincial chairman of the QWP, will contest for provincial assembly seat from Charsadda.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Vice-President Amir Muqam would again contest polls from his native Shangla district, wherefrom he was elected to the National Assembly in the 2002 and 2008 general elections. In the 2008 polls, when Amir Muqam was provincial president of PML-Q, he had also contested from NA-4 Peshawar and lost to ANP candidate Arbab Zahir Khan. As Amir Muqam is also keen to do provincial politics, he is also planning to fight for a provincial assembly seat, most probably from Swat district.

Jamaat-e-Islami deputy chief and former senior provincial minister Sirajul Haq has been nominated to contest for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly seat from his native Lower Dir district where his main opponent would be ANP’s outgoing provincial minister Hidayatullah.

Asif Luqman Qazi, son of late Qazi Hussain Ahmad, has been nominated by the JI to contest for NA-5 Nowshera, the seat his father had won in 2002, and also provincial assembly constituency PK-14 Nowshera.

Maulana Hamid-ul-Haq, son of Maulana Sami-ul-Haq, has been nominated to contest for NA-6 Nowshera by his party, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Sami. He was elected to the National Assembly on this seat on the MMA ticket in 2002 but didn’t take part in the 2008 polls in which ANP candidate Masood Abbas Khattak emerged victorious by defeating Mian Jamsheduddin of PPP-Sherpao and Mian Muzaffar Shah of PPP.

Pakistan Muslim League-Likeminded (PML-LM) Chairman Salim Saifullah Khan is going to contest election from his own town Lakki Marwat (NA-27) while Pakistan People’s Party provincial president Anwar Saifullah Khan will contest for a provincial assembly seat from his native Lakki Marwat.

The ANP has nominated former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti to contest from NA-9 Mardan in his native city and also from PK-23 Mardan. His rival in NA-9 would be PML-N’s Khwaja Mohammad Khan Hoti, who had quit the ANP to join Imran Khan’s PTI before gravitating to Nawaz Sharif’s party.

MINGORA, March 11: Qaumi Watan Party chairman Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao said on Monday that he would announce a special package to rebuild the damaged infrastructure in Malakand division particularly in Swat district if his party was voted to power in the upcoming elections.

“Around 2.5 million people were displaced and the infrastructure was destroyed in Malakand division. It is yet to be reconstructed,” he told a public meeting at Gulkada in Swat to mark the 38th death anniversary of his elder brother and former governor Hayat Mohammad Khan Sherpao.

QWP leaders Bakht Baidar Khan, Fazl Rehman, former senator Shujaul Mulk, Sher Badurzada Khan and others also addressed the gathering.

On the occasion, several activists and supporters of Awami National Party and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, including former nazim Bacha Khan, Dil Nawaz, Anwar Shah, Ihsanullah, Ali Mohammad Khan, Fida Hussain and Sabz Ali announced joining QWP.

Mr Sherpao said that neither the president nor the prime minister paid any visit to Malakand division to express solidarity with the militancy-hit people.

“We will introduce a comprehensive financial package to revive tourism sector in the picturesque Swat valley to attract foreign and local tourists that will not only generate revenue, but will also create job opportunities for people in general and youth in particular,” he said.

The QWP chief said there was a lot of potential for hydel power generation in Swat and the rest of Malakand division. He said that his party would work out a plan to tap the water resources so as to help overcome the energy crisis.

Mr Sherpao said that security forces should move out of Malakand division and transfer its control to the civil administration.

He said that chief minister and leader of the opposition in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly held talks about the caretaker setup in the province without taking other political parties into confidence. “There is no transparency in the process to put in place a caretaker setup and there is uncertainty in this regard,” Mr Sherpao said.

He said that QWP would restore viable and sustainable peace after securing victory in the upcoming general elections and rid the country of corrupt and unscrupulous elements.

Mr Sherpao said that people should initiate accountability of corrupt elements by using their right of vote and unite for the success of true representatives of Pakhtun nation.

He said that conspiracies were being hatched to influence the electoral process. He threatened to launch a movement if the upcoming elections were delayed.

Malala’s condition remains stable

  

BIRMINGHAM: Malala Yousafzai ‘remains stable’ according to the medical team monitoring her care at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Malala spent a second comfortable night at the hospital and continues to be cared for by Queen Elizabeth and Birmingham Children’s Hospital doctors.

On Tuesday, the Medical Director of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dav Rosser said Malala would require reconstructive surgery. He reiterated that that Malala had chance of making a good recovery.

Malala's condition shows improvement

PESHAWAR: The young children’s rights leader Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by militants in Swat along with two other school girls, is showing improvement, Geo News reported
Currently, Malala is being treated at Combined Military Hospital, Peshawar for more than 48 hours. Family sources told that though she is still unconscious, her body response has shown improvement.

She is in the intensive care unit of the hospital where senior surgeons are trying hard to save her life.

More than 31 hours have passed since she was operated to remove bullet from her head and the doctors told that the next 24 hours are critical for Malala’s life.

A board including expert surgeons will meet again on Friday to review her condition. The doctors said they are trying their best to save Malala’s life but also appealed for prayers.

Malala punished over her love for education: KPK minister

ISLAMABAD: Khyber Pakhtukhwa Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain has said that Malala Yousufzai has been punished over her love for education.

Addressing a news conference here on Tuesday, Hussain said: “We are in contacts with doctors for the treatment of Malala.”

Yousafzai, a children rights activist who was injured in a gun attack earlier today, is said to be out of danger.

She has been shifted to CMH Hospital in Peshawar from Mingora. Yousafzai was critically injured, along with another girl, after gunmen fired upon her school van in Mingora town of district Swat.

“Terrorists dont like peace and education. But they would not succeed in their objectives,” Hussain said.

“I salute peace activists for their work at this difficult time.”

He said that journey to peace would continue despite such terrorist attacks.

At 14, she is more courageous than I or Ghulam Ahmad Bilour will ever be. The Minister for Railways caved in recently to the Taliban to have his name struck from the Taliban’s hit list. Malala Yousafzai, however, stared down the Taliban until the very moment they shot her in the head yesterday.
While I write to express my disgust with the extremists from the safe confines of a Canadian suburb, Malala and her father stood their ground in Mingora even when the city fell to the Taliban. And while the Taliban destroyed girls’ schools in the Swat region, Malala, then only 11 years old, emerged as the most articulate and forceful voice for education in Pakistan. Today she lies in a hospital bed fighting for her life.
As the armed men forcibly stopped and boarded Malala’s school bus, she must have known all along that they the militants had come for her. I can’t begin to imagine what she must have felt when the militants asked the driver to identify her (Malala Yousufzai sok daa?). While one militant held a pistol to the driver’s head, the other walked up to Malala and shot her in the forehead. Two other girls were also shot in the attack.
It was not very long ago when she spoke to the New York Times while the Taliban were busy establishing their rule in the Swat valley.  The Taliban forbade schooling for girls in Swat. Malala and her classmates attended school in disguise as they hid their books in their clothes. Such dedication for education is unheard of in the world. Defying acid attacks and bullets, Malala and other young girls continued to attend school until it was no longer possible.  “I will get my education if it is at home, school, or any place,” she said.
This is not the first time in Pakistan that a bus was stopped and civilians were removed and shot at. The only difference is that those killed on the roadside in the past were Shias.  For years, Taliban and their sympathizers have stopped buses along the Tal-Parachinar Road and removed Shia passengers to either murder or kidnap them for ransom. Recently, Taliban and their sympathisers have executed several dozen Shias in Quetta and Gilgit-Baltistan region after removing them from buses.
Why is that the State and the society have largely remained silent on the wanton murder of the Shias and other religious minorities in Pakistan. Why is that Imran Khan, Jamat-i-Islami or other religious outfits in Pakistan have never embarked on a long march for the plight of Shias and other victims of sectarian violence. I would argue that had the State and the society acted with resolve against sectarian violence in the past, the extremists would not have felt so invincible as to target an unarmed 14-year old girl in broad daylight.
Pakistan has done a poor job looking after its children. The physical, mental, and sexual abuse of children is widespread in Pakistan. Add to this the food and other insecurities brought about by economic turmoil in the country that is likely to cause stunted growth in the future generations. The attack on Malala is further proof of the fact that the life and welfare of the youth is not safe in Pakistan.
Who is Malala Yousufzai?
As her attackers asked in Pushto who is Malala Yusufzai (Malala Yousufzai sok daa?), they obviously did not know her or of her. Let me answer this question for anyone who wants to know. Malala is what Taliban will never be. She is fearless, enlightened, articulate, and a young Muslim woman who is the face of Pakistan and the hope for a faltering nation that can no longer protect its daughters.

Malala under treatment after being shot

PESHAWAR: The National Peace Award winner, Malala Yusufzai, who was attacked in Swat, is currently under treatment in CMH Peshawar.

The teenage children's right activist Malala was injured along with two other girls when unknown assailants opened fire on her vehicle in Swat.

Meanwhile, Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility of attack on Malala Yusufzai.

"We carried out this attack," TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told AFP, speaking by telephone from an undisclosed location. "Anybody who speaks against us will be attacked in the same way."

President Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhuttto Zardari have strongly condemned the incident.

CMH Peshawar has called a team of doctors from Lady Reading Hospital.

According to police, Malala along with two other schoolgirls was injured when unknown attackers opened fire on her vehicle in Mingora after identifying Malala. The girls were on their way back from school.

Sources told that Malala and the two other injured girls were shifted to District Headquarter Hospital in Saidu Sharif where doctors told that Malala was hit by a bullet in her head.

Later, Malala were taken to Peshawar via helicopter and admitted in CMH Peshawar.

It is important to mention that Malala had been receiving threats to her life, after which she was provided with a special car and unarmed security personnel.

The international children's advocacy group Kids Rights Foundation included Malala among the nominees for the International Children's Peace Prize, making her the first Pakistani girl nominated for the award.

For her courageous and outstanding services for the promotion of peace under extremely hostile conditions in Swat, she was awarded the first National Peace Award by the Pakistani government on 19 December 2011.
