Benazir Bhutto

Benazir Bhutto Song " Zinda Hai Bhutto "

Powerful Figure

Bhutto was the first woman elected to lead a Muslim state. She was twice elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan.

University Days

After obtaining a degree at Harvard in the United States, Bhutto (right) completed a course in International Law and Diplomacy at Oxford in England 1977, around the time this photo was taken

Legacy

Bhutto's father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (shaking hands with Indira Gandhi in this 1972 photo; Benazir is to his left), was also Prime Minister of Pakistan. In 1977, however, he was charged with conspiracy to murder a rival, then imprisoned and executed.

Triumphant Return

In the wake of her father's execution, Bhutto took over the leadership of his party, the Pakistan Peoples Party. In 1988, she was permitted to return to Pakistan from England where she had been waiting in exile

Elected

The PPP won the largest bloc of seats in the National Assembly in the 1988 elections, and Bhutto was sworn in as Prime Minister of a coalition government.

Ground-Breaker

At 35 years of age, Bhutto was the youngest person to ever lead a Muslim-majority state in modern times

Family

In 1987, Bhutto married Asif Ali Zardari, a member of the National Assembly. He would serve as Environment Minister during Bhutto's second premiership.

U.S. Ally

Bhutto has often received the support of America and its leaders. In 1989, she was a guest at the White House of the first President Bush

Inspiration

In recent years, Pakistanis opposed to the leadership of President Pervez Musharraf have looked to Bhutto as a possible successor

History Repeats Itself

In 2007, Bhutto was once again allowed to return from exile. During a rally against in Karachi in October, she narrowly escaped an assassin's bomb

House Arrest

During the fall standoff, Pakistani security forces confined Bhutto to a house owned by a PPP Senator in Lahore.

Outspoken

Bhutto speaks to the press from behind barbed wire erected outside her house in Islamabad during the standoff. She remained unbowed in her criticism of the Musharraf regime.

A Life Cut Short

Bhutto's death leaves the political future of Pakistan in grave uncertainty
